INDIAN TULWAR SWORD
Ca. AD 1800 - 1900.A tulwar sword with a long, single-edged blade that is un-fullered, slightly curved, and tapers to a point. Its steel hilt has a large disc pommel with a bud finial at the top, a cross guard with convex quillons, and long langets on each side of the blade. The tulwar sword is a versatile weapon widely used in the Indian subcontinent. Characterized by a curved blade with a single edge, these swords were primarily designed for slashing and cutting motions in close combat. The blade typically featured a slightly curved or straight spine, leading to a sharp point at the tip. Tulwars often had a distinctive hilt with a knuckle guard and a disc-shaped pommel, providing a secure grip for the wielder. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 36.25.1606.Size: 700mm x 90mm; weight 515gProvenance: Private UK collection; acquired on the UK art market, pre-2000.
