JEMDET NASR / SUMERIAN CYLINDER SEAL OF PINK MARBLE - WITH A SIGNED NOTE FROM PROFESSOR W. G. LAMBER
Ca. 3000 BC.A pink marble cylinder seal with the design consisting of a frieze of three motifs, each consisting of pairs of short lines moving to a central dot, with two smaller dots, one above one below. It is in fine condition. The item depicted may be stylized water creatures. Wilfred G. Lambert (1926–2011) was a prominent historian and archaeologist, specializing in Assyriology and Near Eastern Archaeology. Born in Birmingham, Lambert earned degrees in Classics and Oriental Languages from the University of Cambridge. Over three decades, he contributed significantly to deciphering cuneiform tablets, collaborating closely with the British Museum. Post-retirement, Lambert remained active in scholarly pursuits, notably identifying historical texts and contributing to projects like the Catalogue of the Western Asiatic Seals.Size: 12mm x 12mm; weight 5gProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s.
