WARSAW VAAD HARABANIM - LETTER SIGNED BY RABBI MENACHEM ZEMBA AND OTHERS IN SUPPORT OF RABBI ELIMELECH BENZION SRIBNITZKY, RABBI OF PIASECNA.

Letter sent by leading Warsaw rabbis to Ezras Torah in New York, just before the Holocaust, August 1939, appealing for desperately needed financial support for Rabbi Elimelech Benzion Sribnitzky, Rabbi of Piasecna. The letter is signed by Rabbi Menachem Zemba, Rabbi Shlomo david Kahana, Rabbi Yaakov Silberstein, Rabbi Avraham Zibenberg and Reb Yaakov Gesundheit – secretary.

Rabbi Menachem Zemba (1883-1943), born to a family of Kotzk-Ger chassidim and one of the most prominent and respected rabbinical figures in pre-WWII Poland. As a young man he studied Torah supported financially by his father-in-law and refused to accept a rabbinical position, but in 1935 he was persuaded to join Warsaw’s Vaad Harabanim. He was killed in the Warsaw ghetto and his voluminous manuscripts, including a 1000-page commentary on the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah were destroyed.
