Appeal by Chief Rabbi of Dagestan Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchaki to Sir Moses Montefiore to come to the aid of the Jews of Hamadan and Kurdistan, based on reports of their persecution that he had received from Moslem pilgrims. Written on official stationery and signed.
Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchaki (1846-1917), Chief Rabbi of Dagestan (1868-1907), emigrated to Eretz Yisrael where he established the Be’er Yaakov settlement, but lived in Yerushalayim. Author of Oholei Yaakov, discussing the origin of the Dagestan community and the whereabouts of the ‘Lost Ten Tribes’.
Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore, great British philanthropists who devoted their lives to improving the conditions of Jews around the world through their generosity and political intervention.
