Ca. Late 19th century AD.An antique American Knights of Pythias ceremonial sword with a single-edged blade decorated with etched floral motifs, the owner’s name (Joseph Cherest), the manufacturer’s name (M.C. Lilley and Co., Columbus, Ohio), and the motto of the Knights (F.C.B.). The hilt is gilded brass and the pommel is lion-shaped. The handle is wrapped in ray skin and wire. The nickel-plated scabbard is decorated with the gilded figure of a Roman soldier, military paraphernalia in relief, and various decorative elements. It is stamped with the number "87" on the ricasso and "96" on the scabbard. Size: L: 40 in., (101.6 cm); 1190gProvenance: Property of a Central London Gallery, acquired on the US art market.
